Ashleigh's Blog

I just had the URGE Ed.

Just a minor quick sketch up of one main idea to produce and lay out my zine in this way, its not defined at all yet but wanted to get a feel of how it could look whilst flicking through, and if the concept works or not. these are some intial thumbnails.

This set of photo’s didn’t appeal to me like the others did, as i was a little cautious of taking photos at night, just purely because its the least area of practice i have had. also, being tired, and very not in the mood didnt help my directions with the model, but hey, there had to be an outcome.

These groups of photo’s show my interpretation of a ‘vernacular’ perspective, i tend to go for things around my hometown and looking deeper into them than just a quick reaction gave me reasons why to include them in this series.

For intial thoughts on my zine, i thought going for the humour factor would portray a more interesting style of reading. i wanted to try out ideas that would engage the readers into not knowing what style was coming next, instead of one joke leading to another etc… therefore i found different ways people try take the mick out of the police, as this shows an imediate reaction of what the publics view is towards the force (which a significant pointer included within my story throughout the zine.) one of many familiar ‘jokes’ included this, i did find it in somewhat humorous, but also thought it was a little sad, and actually finding not only this, but many others that hold the same ora, i changed my mind completely. If i could look at this and just think ‘yeah its quite funny, but its rather pathetic’ then that proves many others could think the same. i also know my chosen topic is more based on seriousness than take the piss out of.

Seperating a little from looking at actual zine designs, as a favourite hobbie of mine, i wanted to study some photography and see how many encorporate just pure imagery (single photo’s) into creating personal and descriptive zines.

Many images i found that captured alot of feeling was the work of Paul Politis. I found his work very inspiring, and that not only does he manage to find very unique design in every day life to turn into a beautiful image, but he can so by taking any random view, and it could be the least exciting thing you could think of, yet all the image will portray is excitement. His black and white photography is a great standing in for the development of a zine, especially how the lack of colour is proven not to be needed for his images, making them strong and vivid. Its probably the last thing you’d expect to see in a zine, and people may question why i choose his work in relation, but i feel sometimes a stronger zine comes in much more effective than a classic humorous design that everyone is expecting.

All of these images set a certain environment, one that at the time, only the photographer could see into, to then creating an image everyone could see into. These are just some personal favourites i have picked out.

a little bit of adele helping me through the work.

I really took a fancy into this applejack set. i love the ‘jotty’ and ‘witty’ illustrations, feeling like they sell the story with an attractive humorous zine feel. i like the thought of using real life images and giving them a sketchy personality. i would like to take this into my own interpretations.

Ergh. After being away from lincoln for so long now due to a stupidly long illness, im slowly getting back into the work spirit and loved an excuse to get out the house and explore on the theme of ‘beauty’ through a lense. Gave me a chance to play about with my camera and gather some friends out for a little shoot.
